Do you have a favorite insect book, I have several older books on entomology and other types of invertebrates that I use and go from one to the other if I can`t find something.
Those researchers in the old days were really good at it, and they had no modern technology. Horse-back, boat, and steam train in the 1800`s

My favorite is Journey to the ants its a bit advanced but was still a good read

"A Field Guide to the Ants of New England." It is not very useful if you are not in New England, but it tells you everything. How to identify down to species level, where to find them, and areas they have been collected. The matrix and dichotomous keys are very useful.
