It seems to be an exaggeration. I mean, I've not seen any that have caused problems. However, I'm sure some are poisonous.

It just depends on the species. I will admit, people are definetly more scared than they should be... harmful or not.

Technically they're venomous, and no, most can't kill you, unless you get bit by a brown recluse or a sicarius terrosus. Also all spiders are venomous.

Just a quick addition to some of the comments, MOST spiders are "venomous", that is they inject their venom in a prey via fangs. I prefer to use the term "venomous" over poisonous, which is usually ingested not injected. There are a few spiders that are not venomous since they have evolved over time and either lost their venom glands or the ability to produce venom. Unless a person is highly allergic to a spiders venom (much like some people are with the venom of a bee sting) a bite will be of little concern. But having said that, some venom can be potent and may require an emergency room visit! Such as the Black widow who's venom is said to be 15 times more potent than a rattle snake. Good thing the quantity injected is far less than that of a rattler!

How many spiders can bite you once and you die from it?

Not many! There are very few, including the Black Widow, the most venomous spider in North America, the Redback of Australia, and the Wandering spider are two other higher potency venom carriers. One must either have an allergic reaction to a spider's venom (like some have from a bee sting), or little children and aging adults with weak immune systems, who are the most susceptible. Having said that, very few people have died from spider bites. More people will die from lightening strikes in a year than spider bites over decades!
