I found this guy out in our shop. It's half way through winter and I was surprised to find him. What species is it anyways? Anyone know?

I looks very similar to the polygonids AKA anglewings. I see no question mark or comma so I am thinking that this a species of tortoiseshell

They overwinter as adults so that is why you found him at this time of year.

I caught my first compton tortoishell a couple days ago up on the au Sable river in Crawford Co., MI. I beleive mine was a female due to the large size.
