Is there something on the feet of the Mydas fly or is that how they look?
Horsefly bites hurt really bad! I got bit as a kid at a pool, wonder if they are attracted to the water or the smell of chlorine...

We have a couple species of horse flies in my area. One species is more colored than the real dark one. I had a few photo`s but I think I deleted them.

Females need standing, somewhat stagnant water to lay their eggs over. Ponds are one of the best places, especially if they're near farms with large animals. They lay the eggs in huge masses on leaves right above the water and then the larvae drop in after they hatch.

That sounds about right, We have a pond, and horses are nearby. Are they attracted to the sound of water? It seemed like they only came around when we were causing the water to splash.

They use carbon dioxide and sight to locate potential hosts, but splashing around could have at least given them something to zero in on since you were moving.

Very cool and like the pics. What is on the feet of that Mydas fly? Looks like plants to me.

So if you wanted to get something like these, how would you? Can you get them shipped in?T.C. wrote:These aren't common species, and especially not in my area. I generally only see a few horse fly species and Lucilia sp.
