You'll want to keep an eye on mite levels as well (didn't see that while quickly scanning through). If mite levels get too high, freeze the whole thing and start over. You can also put something sticky around the bottom of the cup and that'll help catch all the mites.

Flightless fruitflies are a better option. Placing them in a setup decreases the chances of them escaping and leaving your insects hungry, given you have a secure lid.

An easy way to get tons of flies it a bait trap with rotting fruit. You'll get hundreds, literally.

you should always get the flightless ones. those are the ones I have and they're pretty darn hard to contain even without wings. I can't imagine trying with flying ones
